ANALYZING THE FAKE DMCA
Sometimes, you just got to applaud the creativity of these scammers. This one deviates from setting up a fake website and then filing a DMCA. What these scammers have done in this case is a 2 step approach
Step 1 – Post a piece of content from a website on the target page as a comment, anonymously. In this case, the comments were posted on the target reports at ripoffreport.com by anonymous3423 on May 19, 2016 & May 21, 2016 , and by aliias on May 19, 2016.
Step 2- Wait for a few weeks, and file DMCA notices on Google by impersonating the author of the original content. There’s a good chance that everything will check out and Google might de-index the target link from Google.
That’s exactly what was done here. The perpetrators copied a piece of content from a ‘free’ e-book at Amazon.com – ‘A comprehensive look at bipolar disorder‘ , and posted it on all 4 links on the target Ripoff pages as anonymous comments. After 3 weeks, they identify themselves as the author ‘Tom Abernathy‘ and file fake DMCA notices at Google.com.
It’s just that the real Tom Abernathy has no idea when we asked him about these DMCAs. He can be reached at [email protected] …
Update 1: [27 July 2016] So, we just got word from [email protected], and our suspicions are turning out to be true. We’ve decided to investigate this further, and will not get more experts and authorities involved to get to the bottom of this. Next, we’ll be contacting Amazon Inc, Ripoffreport, Bipolar Inner Circle and other related parties to gather more intel.
SO WHAT WERE THEY TRYING TO HIDE ?
There were random complaints against David Oliver – Bipolar Inner Circle, on Ripoffreport. Now, we’re not judging the merits of these complaints and understand that these websites may anger and frustrate a lot of people, but honestly, by filing fake DMCAs and committing perjury, impersonation and other IP crimes, no one wins here.
EDITOR’S COMMENT : For those who might ask – ‘why and how do we interject that ‘David Oliver’ has something to do with this fake DMCA. Couldn’t it be a coincidence ?’, we will say this – When someone goes and creates a whole new fake news site, falsifies his/her identity and submits fake DMCA to try and de-list some very targeted content on Google, it signals intent and a plan. It is obvious that ‘David Oliver’ or someone he hired was directly involved in this crime. David Oliver also cannot plead ignorance in this matter, since this notice on Google search is hard to miss, really.
