ANALYZING THE FAKE DMCA
This case exemplifies how easy it is for a bunch of scam artists to con Google and remove legitimate content and URLs from it’s search results. Seriously, you’ll be amazed at the intricacies of this fraud, and the vulnerabilities within Google verification team.
All it took for these scammers, was to acquire an aged domain name resembling a news site, add a wordpress theme, plant content and file a fake DMCA. Google will do the rest.
In comes fox18news.com, which we’ve covered on many other investigation reports. Let’s analyze the planted articles –
1- http://fox18news.com/2014/11/25/teen-missing-from-north-carolina-wilderness-therapy-camp-found-dead-after-breaking-hip-in-stream-autopsy/ (DMCA: https://www.lumendatabase.org/notices/12082585)
- The author –
- As per hosting history, the domain was parked until 4th March 2016, after which a wordpress theme and some random articles were uploaded to it. The website did NOT exist before March 2016. Which means that the article which claims to be published on November 25, 2014, did NOT exist.
- So when was the article published ? Examine the URL structure of the image in the article to get an idea – http://fox18news.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/lansing27n-3-web.jpg. April 2016….
2- http://fox18news.com/2014/11/17/atlanta-teen-missing-from-wilderness-therapy-program/ (DMCA: https://www.lumendatabase.org/notices/12224947)
- Same as above, the author ‘Amelia Hoghern‘ is common among these fake news websites – localnewsarizona.com/author/amelia-hoghern/ , sydneylocalnews.com/author/amelia-hoghern.
- URL structure of the image in the article tells us the date – http://fox18news.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/fr_missingteen.jpg . May 2015.
The sad part is, these fake DMCAs managed to de-index http://smokymountainnews.com/news/item/14655-atlanta-teen-missing-from-wilderness-therapy-program from Google search, a matter of shame for Google and everyone involved. And something which we will confront Trails Carolina on.
SO WHAT WERE THEY TRYING TO HIDE ?
A kid went missing from a therapy camp by Trails Carolina, and is found dead later on. Press puts up news stories about this incident. A couple of years later, Trails Carolina wants this story to go away because it hurts their business. So screw the ethics they say….and hire a bunch of junkies to get the results AT ALL COSTS. So what if a kid died, as long as nobody can find anything about it on Google.
We are WebActivism. We have our eyes on you.
EDITOR’S COMMENT : For those who might ask – ‘why and how do we interject that ‘Trails Carolina’ has something to do with this fake DMCA. Couldn’t it be a coincidence ?’, we will say this – When someone goes and creates a whole new fake news site, falsifies his/her identity and submits fake DMCA to try and de-list some very targeted content on Google, it signals intent and a plan. It is obvious that ‘Trails Carolina’ or someone they hired was directly involved in this crime. Trails Carolina also cannot plead ignorance in this matter, since this notice on Google search is hard to miss, really.
